This view has similitude with the Neoplatonic Hermeticism which gained control of the Vatican in the 16th century during the occult Renaissance.

This is a blatant, and indeed disgustingly brazen example of the infiltration of occultism into “traditional” Catholicism in our time.

The Rorate Caeli blog is reputed to be the most influential “traditional” Catholic outlet on the Internet. Last February one of its columnists was published on the editorial page of the Wall Street Journal offering a lavish encomium for Tridentine Judaism’s most influential lay American leader, the late Justice Antonin Scalia.

Blaming the Romans for the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ

In our time of nearly universal apostasy the churches have taken to blaming the Roman authorities for the death of Christ on the Cross while exculpating the Pharisees.

We see this fashion everywhere, from the Vatican to revered  American “Conservatives,” such as Judge Andrew Napolitano and chat show host Bill O’Reilly of Fox News.

Napolitano wrote: “On the first Good Friday, the Romans executed Jesus because they were persuaded that by claiming to be the Son of God, He might foment a revolution against them...they feared a revolution that would disrupt their worldly power, and so they condemned Him to death by crucifixion." (Jews are not mentioned anywhere in Mr. Napolitano's column, which was published online by Lew Rockwell on April 17, 2014).

Scapegoating Pilate 

Bill O’Reilly, in his book The Last Days of Jesus: His Life and Times A Special Illustrated Edition of Killing Jesus (Henry Holt: 2014), states: “...the responsibility belongs to Pilate” (p. 221). As part of O’Reilly’s blame-game he falsely writes: “Only the Roman governor possesses the ius gladii — the right of the sword. Or as it is known, the right to execute” (p. 221). 

Really? Then who killed St. Stephen, Mr. O’Reilly? The Pharisee text Mishnah, in tractate Sanhedrin, gives a variety of types of executions to be carried out by the Sanhedrin. It is true that the Jews could not crucify anyone in Roman territory, but they could execute by stoning, as they did to Stephen. Note that Stephen was stoned after a council of the Sanhedrin had met (Acts 7:54-59). 

I remember sitting through a Holy Week sermon by a talented Jesuit homilist who, like the skilled orator he was, lifted his voice at key moments for dramatic effect. At one point in his sermon, this otherwise mild priest shouted, “Pontius Pilate was a thug!” He had offered not a word of disapprobation for the Pharisees, or the generality of the Jews of Jerusalem. It was the Romans who were made to bare the onus of guilt for decide. We have witnessed this falsification at colleges and universities, and in Hollywood movies and on television.

The popes have their own elite theologians who offer sermons to the pontiff and the papal household.  Rev. Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa, PhD., is a Franciscan priest. In 1980 he was appointed by Pope John Paul II to the stellar position of “Preacher to the Papal Household,” and confirmed again in that position by Pope Benedict XVI in 2005. He continues in this role under Pope Francis. In this capacity he preaches a weekly sermon during Advent and Lent in the presence of the Pope, cardinals, bishops, prelates of the Roman Curia and the general superiors of religious orders. 

The point emphasized with the finesse of Machiavelli by Cantalamessa, is that the Pharisees are not guilty, or they are of lesser guilt, painted in existential shades-of-gray. The main villain in his account is the Romans. Here is an excerpt from the text of a sermon by the personal preacher to the last three popes. Note how Cantalamessa blames the Sadducees and lessens the guilt of the Pharisees (with the requisite qualifications of course): 

“The Gospel data is just that much more credible insofar as the contrast with the Pharisees is not at all prejudicial or general. Jesus has friends among them (Nicodemus is one of them); we find him at dinner in one of their houses; they are willing at least to dispute with him and to take him seriously, unlike the Sadducees...Of course Pilate was not so sensitive to the demands of justice to be worried about the fate of an unknown Jew; he was a hard and cruel type, ready to suppress with blood the tiniest hint of rebellion....he did not try to save Jesus out of compassion for the victim but only to score a point against his accusers with whom he had been in a cold war since his arrival in Judea. 

“Naturally, this does not at all diminish Pilate’s responsibility in Christ’s condemnation. He was just as responsible as the Jewish leaders...” (end quote from Cantalamessa). 

Seeking to ingratiate himself with his rabbinic masters, Fr. Cantalamessa is eager to find anything positive to say about the Pharisees. In the Roman Pilate, who declared he could find nothing evil in Jesus, the papal preacher locates the axis of iniquity: “...he did not try to save Jesus out of compassion for the victim but only to score a point against his accusers.” 

How does Father Cantalamessa know this? Pilate risked the ire of his superiors in Rome by seeming to seek to spare Jesus, a “rabble-rouser” who a majority of His own Jewish people despised and wanted dead: “Pilate sought to release Him: but the Jews cried out, saying, if thou let this man go, thou are not Caesar’s friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.” (John 19:12). 

And Pilate only really risked this, according to the “Preacher to the Papal Household,” not because of any justice in himself, but as a “cold-warrior” merely seeking to score some “points” against his Pharisaic adversaries? How does Cantalamessa know this? What is his evidence — his own prestige as capo of the ecclesiastic Mafia in the Vatican? 

Cantalamessa concludes with two lies, the latter a real whopper: 1. that the Sadducees were more guilty of deicide than the Pharisees, and 2. that Pilate was “just as responsible as the Jewish leaders.” The latter is a satanic falsehood that mocks his listeners for their ignorance of the Gospel of John. In John 19:11 Jesus tells Pilate, “He that delivered Me unto thee hath the greater sin.”

Writing in Oxford University’s The Oxford Bible Commentary, Protestant “Scripture scholar” C.M. Tuckett engages in the modernist fad of casting doubt on the authenticity of the New Testament account of the life, trial and death of Jesus. For Tuckett, the rabbinic Mishnah is credible. The Gospel of Mark is not. Tuckett is so duplicitous however, that he omits quoting from the rabbinic texts when the citation would undercut his thesis. For example, he leaves out all reference to the Babylonian Talmud’s account in Sanhedrin 43a of Jesus having Roman friends in high places when he wants to echo Cantalamessa and make the point that Mark’s “picture of Pilate...in no way squares with what we know from elsewhere of the man, viz., a cruel tyrant who would not have had the slightest compunction in executing an odd Jew or two...Pilate simply ordered Jesus’ crucifixion without any compunction at all.” 

The modern world conspires to qualify, modify, moderate and mitigate, like a shyster lawyer, the guilt of the founders of the religion of Judaism. This is crucial to them due to the fact that the religion of Orthodox Judaism is the direct descendant and continuation of the religion of the Pharisees. As this truth leaks out, it is more than ever incumbent upon Right-wing media celebrities like Napolitano and O’Reilly, and the Vatican’s Cantalamessa and Oxford’s Tuckett, to make certain that the Romans take the lion’s share of the blame for that which the Jewish leaders, including the Pharisees, are guilty. What is there to debate after 1 Thessalonians 2:14-15? “...the Jews Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men.” 

The Testimony of St. Paul

To assert that the Romans bear the principal share of responsibility for the death of Jesus is a contrived argument motivated by a desire to serve and appease rabbinic and Zionist power on earth. We have the unambiguous statement of Scripture in 1 Thessalonians 2:14-15. This Scripture statement was made by the Apostle Paul without qualifications of any kind.  “It is generally agreed that I Thessalonians was written about A.D. 50, and certainly Paul would have had the idea that Jews killed the Lord Jesus long before he wrote this letter. Indeed, Paul was in Jerusalem shortly after Jesus’ death (Gal. 1:13, 18).” 

It was by the Jewish leaders’ malice that Christ was killed and there was nothing new in that: “This is the heir, let us kill him” (Matt. 21:38). Those who killed Jesus were, by their own testimony, “the descendants of them that killed the prophets” (Matt. 23:31). The spirit of persecution was a tradition with them, descending from one generation to another and Jesus prophesied that they would continue these crimes: “Therefore I am sending you prophets and wise men and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town” (Matt. 23:34). 

St. Paul testified that this was transpiring in his time: they were contrary to all men, that is, hindering the course of the Gospel appointed for humanity’s salvation and despising all other nations in comparison to themselves. This situation continues in our day, with the difference being that those priests and ministers in our time who call themselves followers of Jesus and imitators of Paul, assist Judaism in hindering the course of the Gospel. 

In the next passage in Thess., v. 16, Paul states that the leaders of the Jews are under God’s “wrath” for these actions of theirs. So too are all the ones masquerading as “Christians” who, so as to be seen as respectable in the eyes of the world and its media, and to advance their business, career, celebrity, power or bank account, defend to lesser or greater degrees, the Pharisees, the Talmud, Midrash or Kabbalah, the rabbis or the Israeli Zionism that is the product of these spiritual plagues, these Christ-killing ideologies. 

If we are indeed Christians, then it is certainly fitting, necessary and just, to dare to speak as Jesus and Paul did, and to call the ideology of Judaism a Christ-killing phenomenon whose recurrence was prophesied. 

Granted, gentile racists do the work of the rabbis when targeting some hapless Judaic child, who did not choose his or her Judaic ethnicity, as a “Christ killer.” This is contrary to Scripture: “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” (Ephesians 6:12).  A synonym for this spiritual wickedness is the Christ-killing ideology. The Romans embodied no such spirituality or ideology. Roman citizenship protected the Apostle Paul. Roman armies fulfilled Christ’s prophecy concerning the religion of Judaism by destroying the Temple of Jerusalem. 

The Reformation doctrine of identifying Rome as the Antichrist, was a factor in producing the lamentable predicament in which we find ourselves today, wherein the Gospel has been counterfeited and “Rome” has replaced the leaders of the first century Jews as the alleged central malefactor in the New Testament. 

Much rabbinic deceit is based on distraction. It is an irony that some Reformation biblicists removed Judaism from principal focus as the primary example of spiritual wickedness in high places, as indicated by the preceding Scripture verses, and, by derogating those passages, replaced Judaism with Rome, a move which continues to disarm Christians of the twenty-first century by distracting attention away from the premier Christ-killing ideology on earth, now as in the first century A.D: rabbinic Judaism. 

That Judaism allies with a subordinate, apostate Rome we neither deny nor minimize. But for Protestants to believe that Rome surpasses Judaism in iniquity, or for Catholics to believe the same about Protestantism, is the sucker trap that undergirds centuries of shameful sectarian wars of religion that have pitted Christian against Christian to the delight of the rabbinate, who, depending on the time and circumstances, gave aid to one side or the other, the better to fan the flames of Christian fratricide, and divide and conquer.

Of whom is Jesus speaking?

There is also the oft-heard claim, echoed by the papal preacher, Cantalamessa, that “...the New Testament sources....excuse them (the Jews), attributing their actions to ignorance (cf. Luke 23:34; Acts 3:17; 1 Corinthians 2:8).  

John MacArthur’s comment on Luke 23:34 is insightful: “...their ignorance certainly did not mean that they deserved forgiveness; rather, their spiritual blindness was itself a manifestation of their guilt (John 3:19).” 

St. Thomas Aquinas stated: 

“...their ignorance did not excuse them from crime, because it was, as it were, affected ignorance. For they saw manifest signs of His Godhood. Hence, He Himself says of them in John 15:22: ‘If I had not come, and spoken to them they would not have sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.’ And John 15:24 ‘If I had not done among them the works that no other man had done, they would not have sin....Bede likewise says, ‘It is to be observed that he does not pray for those who, understanding Him to be the Son of God, preferred to crucify Him rather than acknowledge Him.’...

“All this shows that while they beheld Christ’s marvelous works, it was owing to their hatred that they did not allow him to be the Son of God...The rulers of the Jews knew that he was Christ: and if there was any ignorance in them, then it was affected ignorance, which could not excuse them...” (The Summa Theologica of St. Thomas Aquinas, part III, question 47, articles 5-6).

In Conclusion

We know we are in a world turned upside down when the Babylonian Talmud, with its admission that Jesus had friends among high Roman officials who sought his acquittal, is more truthful than the crooked “Christians” and “Conservatives” who perversely place the main burden of guilt for the deicide on those very officials.

Purim in recent history, 1994-2016

A Chronicle of Calamities and Catastrophes for Gentiles

Introduction

Purim is the rabbinic festival of revenge derived from the Book of Esther and then further embroidered and extended by authoritative Talmudic and Kabbalistic traditions which are observed in Orthodox Judaism as a sacred obligation. An online column is insufficient for anything approaching a full explication of Purim.  A more extensive study will be found on pp. 823-827 of this writer’s Judaism Discovered.

Purim is celebrated as a festival commemorating revenge upon non-Jews. Pious Judaic believers dress in various grotesque, Halloween-type of regalia; much of it reminiscent of the reversals common to the medieval feast of fools, whereby persons of low station masqueraded as aristocrats and aristocrats as peasants; villains as saints and alleged holy people as demons. Consequently, on Purim in New York this writer has witnessed Israeli-Americans dressed as Arab suicide bombers complete with ersatz bomb belts, and rabbis attired as women, gorillas and clowns.

There are deeper meanings attached to Purim than reveling in vengeance against one’s enemies, real or imagined. These are largely outside of our purview here, except to note that Purim entails a perverse obligation for the Judaic male to become intoxicated. He is to become so drunk on Purim that he can’t discern the difference between Mordechai (the Judaic hero of the Book of Esther) and Haman (the Hitler-like villain of the book). In other words, Judaic males are to become nearly blind drunk on Purim. The Talmudic injunction for this behavior is found at BT Megillah 7b. The esoteric reason for this intoxication, which produces a perception of the union of opposites, i.e. of good and evil, rests on the Kabbalistic doctrine (cf. Zohar Bereishis 36 and Chadis 2:137b) which is the occult secret of Purim: that both Haman and Mordechai serve the purposes of Judaism. As the eminent Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch explained it, “...anti-Semitism is the tool through which the God of Israel preserves his people.”



Reproduced above is a full-color front page from a devout Orthodox Judaic religious newspaper. It was published on the 12th of Adar 5767 (March 2, 2007). It depicts two Judaic men drunkenly cavorting on Purim: one is holding a liquor bottle and glass of liquor, the other is doing a tipsy somersault; both men are fulfilling their religious obligation. 

Purim in recent history



On Purim 1994: 14th of Adar (February 25), Dr. Baruch Goldstein, an Orthodox Talmudic Israeli from Brooklyn, took a machine gun into the Cave of the Patriarchs in the Palestinian city of Hebron and massacred 40 Palestinians while they prayed (the media have engaged in massacre-denial and reduced the number of those he murdered to 29). He has a shrine in his honor in the Israeli state. The Ninth Degree of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, dedicated to revenge on Masonry’s enemies (by beheading), is inspired by Purim.

On Purim 2001:The late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia aided and abetted, as his numerous activities on behalf of Talmudic training for U.S. lawyers and his own statements testify, the imposition of Talmudic halacha (law) on America. The first documentation in writing which we have of this ominous fact is the letter he dated March 9, 2001, written on Supreme Court stationery, pledging support to a rabbi of the Chabad Lubavitch sect of Christ-haters. Was it a coincidence that Judge Scalia chose to pen his letter to the rabbi on Purim, the 14th of Adar 5761? (For more on this cf. Revisionist History newsletter no. 83).

On Purim 2003: George W. Bush, the Skull and Bones society snake who Scalia helped make President of the United States (cf. Bush v. Gore, 2000), launched the invasion of Iraq during Purim —16th of Adar 5763 —which resulted in the catastrophic decimation of Christianity in that Arab nation and the deaths of tens of thousands of goyim

In Purim week 2016: approximately 35 hours before the beginning of Purim on Wednesday, March 23 at sundown, 14th of Adar 5776, more than 30 gentiles were slaughtered at an airport and subway station in Brussels, Belgium, and hundreds more wounded (cf. “Purim in Brussels”).

Perhaps it is a coincidence that the mass murder, the subversion of the US Constitution, the invasion of the nation of Iraq and the terror slaughter in Brussels all occurred on or near Purim; and then again, perhaps not.

Let him who has eyes to see, do so.

Purim in Brussels


The hidden hand that keeps the Israeli state immune from Wahhabist Islamic terror has inflicted Purim-style vengeance on a dying Europe through that very terror

The terror attacks in Brussels on March 22, not far from the headquarters of the pro-immigration European Union (EU), were to be expected, and more are undoubtedly on the way in Belgium, France, Britain and Germany. These attacks were prepared deliberately by the governments of the West to create the conditions whereby formerly freedom-loving people will beg for a police state. This is point number one.

Christianity as taught historically from Biblical doctrine has been replaced in the West by the religion of suicidal, baby-hating white people: multiculturalism and diversity. This mass insanity has infected the minds of tens of millions of our people who, like Angela Merkel in Germany, the Trudeaus of Canada, the Labour Party in Britain and the Democrat party and Trump-hating Republican party-hierarchy in the U.S., keep preaching, contrary to overwhelming reality, that more immigrants from North Africa and the Middle East enrich our nations and support human rights.

Salah Abdeslam, the fugitive terrorist implicated in the slaughter in Paris, France last November, was shielded for months inside Brussels’ Salafist-Muslim community of immigrants. These immigrants had been given refuge in Belgium from Middle East wars and then, by shielding a mass murderer, demonstated their ingratitude by doing all they could to eviscerate the West that had extended that refuge. 

How will Europeans, and to a lesser extent Americans, who do not respect themselves or their ancient Christian heritage, defeat Wahhabi Islam? People whose highest objective in life is money and pleasure will sell their nation and their children’s future cheaply. They average less than one child per couple. They live for money gained by usury, or one of its other tentacular financial arrangements. Abortion has killed far more European and American children than Wahhabist Islam ever will. These white people have a degenerate pope in the Vatican who trumpets Angela Merkel’s feces-for-brains immigration policy. Europe’s faithless mass of consumeroids have lost the will to defend what their ancestors achieved and secured.

This is Holy Week, when Christians meditate on the Gospel account of the crucifixion of Christ. This is also an unholy week because it will see the beginning of Purim, the rabbinic festival of revenge on the gentiles. The son of the late chief rabbi of Rome, Prof. Ariel Toaff, before he was silenced by lynch mob tactics, proved indisputably in his magnificent book Pasque di Sangue (translated and published underground in English as Blood Passover), that Ashkehanzic Judiacs ceremonially tortured and murdered  Christian children in the European Middle Ages.

There is a hidden hand behind the Saudi Arabian/ISIS brand of Sunni Islamic terror. This terrorism has been consistently aided in Syria by the Israeli government. The ISIS terrorists have never attacked the Israeli state. Like the alliance between the rabbis and the Muslims in Spain in the medieval period, Israeli officials, including Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon, state openly that they prefer a victory of ISIS in Syria.

The message of Purim is one of undying hatred for the genetic seed of Europe which defeated the creed of the Talmud and the Kabbalah during the Catholic Middle Ages and in early Lutheran Germany.

While Saudi/Salafist Islam abandons the Palestinians to the non-existent mercy of the Israelis, who only have to deal with a few out-of-their minds’ knife wielders and rock throwers, machine guns sputter and bombs explode throughout Europe with disastrous regularity.

It is said that the most recent attack, in Brussels, may have been retaliation for the capture of the terrorist Abdeslam; that could be true. What is certain however, is that the hidden hand that keeps the Israeli state immune from ISIS-Islamic terror has inflicted Purim-style vengeance on a dying Europe through that very terror.

Little of this will be revealed this week, however. In the scripted “struggle” against terror, the Christians will get the message that they need to unite more than ever with the spiritual heirs of those who crucified their Savior. They forget that it was the first terrorism that nailed Christ to the Cross, despite the effort of the Roman Pontius Pilate to save Him. As it is written in the Babylonian Talmud, because He had friends among the rulers of Palestine, it was not easy to kill Jesus.

These facts are unknown, and mine is a voice crying in the wilderness, unheard and unheeded.

Tridentine Judaism and the New Supreme Court Nominee

When we examine the curriculum vitae of Merrick Garland, Mr. Obama’s nominee to replace the late Justice Antonin Scalia, we find that, as a federal prosecutor, he helped to mastermind the criminal conspiracy that covered up the ultimate perpetrators of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. Until Bill Jasper’s investigative reports for the John Birch Society are gathered into a book, the best volume on that conspiracy is The Oklahoma City Bombing and the Politics of Terror, a work banned by the US government and forced out of print, though copies are still available on the used book market

Flanked by President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, Garland told reporters in the Rose Garden, “My grandparents left the Pale of Settlement…in the early 1900’s, fleeing anti-Semitism and hoping to make a better life for their children in America,” 

Mr. Garland was raised in a Talmudic community in Chicago by Judaic parents. His mother, Shirley (Horowitz), worked as director of services at Chicago’s “Council for Jewish Elderly.” His father, Cyril Garland, an advertising executive, is deceased. Garland’s wife, Lynn Rosenman, is Judaic royalty. She is the grand-daughter of the late Russian-American attorney and political king-maker, Samuel I. Rosenman, who served in the White House as Special Counsel to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, after promoting FDR’s early political career in New York. 

Victims of the Hegelian dialectic will lament the loss of their “thesis,” Mr. Scalia, and consider the “antithesis,” Garland, a poor substitute. We doubt that Mr. Scalia would have taken so dim a view of Judge Garland, however.

Justice Scalia was a leader in the movement we call Tridentine Judaism. It is a Hegelian synthesis of some adherents of the Tridentine Latin Mass movement inside the Catholic Church, and adherents of Talmudic Judaism inside the synagogue. In a recent Hoffman Wire we informed readers about this network and Mr. Scalia’s role in promoting Talmudic halacha (law) in the American courts. Our Revisionist History newsletter no. 83 contains an extended study of this ominous phenomenon, accompanied by illustrations of rare documents and photos.

Further evidence of the infernal synthesis has materialized online. In February, two renowned Catholic organizations within the Tridentine movement, the Latin Mass Society of England and Wales and International Una Voce, issued “Position Paper 28” on the Internet, titled: The Good Friday Prayer for the Jews in the Extraordinary Form. It’s online here.

Read the scurrilous section entitled, “The Fathers and the Middle Ages.” It could have been written by an Orthodox rabbi. It goes so far as to allege that the Fathers of the Early Church were somehow in favor of rabbinic Judaism!  

In an effort to ask for an amendment of the document, which libels the saintly Nicholas of Donin, the 13th century Judaic convert to Catholicism who has the distinction of having prosecuted the Talmud at the first trial of the rabbinic book in the history of Christendom, we corresponded with the “Catholic” author of The Good Friday Prayer position paper. He is a tutor at St. Benet’s Hall at Oxford University, yet we might as well have been corresponding with one of Judge Scalia’s beloved Chabad rabbis, so thick was this person’s pilpul. In his e-mail to this writer he favorably compared the Babylonian Talmud to the Summa Theologica of St. Thomas Aquinas.

When we attempted to correct some of the more egregious statements in his position paper, which is being circulated throughout the “traditional” and “conservative” Catholic world, he would not engage with our research and resorted to an appeal to consensus reality, telling us, “The paper relies on the scholarship referred to in the footnotes. This is current and respectable; we don't expect everyone to agree, but we do expect reasonable people to accept that the position the paper takes is itself reasonable.” 

The main corpus of the “scholarship referred to in the footnotes” is based on an absurd apologia for Talmudic Judaism which can be resoundingly refuted if any “traditional Catholics” with the necessary resources were interested in commissioning such a refutation.

Justice Scalia lent his prestige to this type of unnatural union between ghastly rabbinic homonculi and the Catholic Church. It is a movement that is growing by leaps and bounds. But instead of censuring it, Catholics are going after us for “denigrating” the “heroic” Mr. Scalia. 

Does the truth count for anything any more, or have we entered an age of total delusion, even among those who claim to be campaigning for the sacred tradition of the Church?

Martin Luther and the “Age of Gold"

Half a Millennium of Total Depravity (1517-2017): 
 A Critique of Luther’s Impact on the Eve of His “Catholic” Apotheosis

         Our civilization is so sick that even the best efforts to prop up its few tottering remnants manifest the pathetic illness that has step by step brought the entire structure crumbling down. The disease in question is a willful, prideful, irrational, and ignorant obsession with “freedom”. But this is a malady that gained its initial effective entry into Christendom in union with the concept of the natural world as the realm of “total depravity”.

         It is crucially important that we recognize both the ultimate responsibility of this hideous willful liberty for the destruction of our Classical and Christian culture as well as the role played by the idea that “incarnated” it historically in our midst for two reasons. The first is so that we can attempt seriously to rid ourselves of their monstrous influence over our own minds, souls, and bodies. The second is because a massive attempt to masquerade the truth regarding their real character and alliance will be mounted in conjunction with the five hundredth anniversary of Martin Luther’s devastating appearance on the public scene in 2017: and this for the sake of maintaining their nefarious impact upon believers and delivering the Faith its coup de grace as a meaningful social force.
         
Allow me to cite Philip Hughes regarding Luther and his antecedents as a means of driving home the point that I wish to make in this brief piece:

All those anti-intellectualist, anti-institutional forces that had plagued and hindered the medieval Church for centuries, whose chronic maleficent activity had, in fact, been the main cause why—as we are often tempted to say—so little was done effectively to maintain a generally higher standard of Christian life; all the forces that were the chronic distraction of the medieval papacy, were now stabilized, institutionalized in the new reformed Christian Church. Enthronement of the will as the supreme human faculty; hostility to the activity of the intelligence in spiritual matters and in doctrine; the ideal of a Christian perfection that is independent of sacraments and independent of the authoritative teaching of clerics; of sanctity attainable through one’s own self-sufficing spiritual activities; denial of the truth that Christianity, like man, is a social thing;—all the crude, backwoods, obscurantist theories bred of the degrading pride that comes with chosen ignorance, the pride of men ignorant because unable to be wise except through the wisdom of others, now have their fling. Luther’s own special contribution—over and above the key doctrines that set all this mischief loose—is the notion of life as radically evil. (Hughes, A History of the Church, Sheed & Ward, 1949, III, 529).

         Hughes eloquently stresses the central fact that our underlying problem is pre-Lutheran in origin. In other words, 1517 is not the source of our woe---any more, for that matter, than 1962 and the opening of Second Vatican Council was. All of the spiritual, intellectual, political, and social diseases that had hovered for centuries about the Camp of the Saints had gathered together, ready for injection into the lymphatic system of Catholic Christendom as one “mega malady”, already long before that date. All of these ultimately reflected a revulsion over the need for the individual and his entire environment to be corrected, perfected, and transformed under the Kingship of Christ with the aid of Faith, Grace, Reason on the one hand, and social authority, both supernatural and natural, on the other. Anyone in 1516 looking for a simple explanation for why he should reject these aids had available to him an embarrassment of arguments from a myriad of fonts indicating that the only thing that really mattered was the individual and his willful feelings; and that relying upon these alone was somehow the sole pathway to pleasing God.
         Nevertheless, the conflicted mind of the Late Middle Ages clearly needed someone with the outlook and the talented rhetorical venom of a Luther effectively to inject this mega malady into the lymph of Christendom. Christian man was too aware of the reality of sin to leap directly into an adulation of his individual willfulness. Luther’s concept of the “total depravity” of the individual and the world in which he lived after Original Sin gave Everyman the pious entry into the obsession with liberty that was required. After all, it seemed so humble to argue for each believer’s personal need to rely solely on God’s grace to save him; for his need to affirm that “freedom” from “enslavement” to “the despotism” of “the Law” that allowed him to avoid a “hopeless” and ultimately spiritually arrogant attempt to bend his individual, life long, workaday thoughts and actions to fall in line with the commands of Christ.
Still, it proved to be very easy over the course of a couple of generations for this negative definition of “liberty”---a “freedom” from the Law---to be transformed, in the Enlightenment, into the means for a positive new and redemptive order of things. In short, it did not take long for a freedom from restraints upon the lawless, individual willfulness of Luther’s totally depraved mankind to be seen as the providential tool for molding unbridled human thoughts and actions into the building blocks of a new Age of Gold. In other words, the more that a freedom from restraints actually ensured that the truly sinful passions of mankind were all released in order to allow flawed individuals truly to became totally depraved, the more that that depravity was now looked upon as something intrinsically wonderful, good, and even pleasing to God. 
It is precisely because this venomous attempt to build a civilization upon a freedom from efforts to fight Original Sin and its willful effects upon individuals is so tempting that it has infected almost all of us in some way or another. We almost all fall prey to the enticement simply to pick what “liberty” most appeals to our particular passion, declare it pleasing to God, willfully condemn whichever application of the same principle we find personally unacceptable when used by others, and ignore the innately poisonous nature of the entire concept. And, quite frankly, we almost all fall prey to the cynical temptation to mobilize the “total depravity” argument anew when we chuckle over the naïve, utopian vision of opponents who want to use law and authority to help make people virtuous in realms where we want “liberty”. But blithely making common cause with “liberty” in a world that did not have to be totally depraved but is making every effort to become so is riding on the back of a willful monster---with the current self-destructive appeal to religious liberty at the top of the list. It is only the positive liberty to use our Faith, Grace, our Reason, and the help of social authorities, both supernatural and natural, to correct and transform ourselves under the Social Kingship of Christ that can lead to a life worth living in this world and to eternal happiness in the next. 
Sad to say, it is absolutely certain that most of our ecclesiastical leaders, foot soldiers of the Zeitgeist that they are, will turn 2017 into a year long paean to the accomplishments of Luther & Company and “all those anti-intellectualist, anti-institutional forces”; “all the crude, backwoods, obscurantist theories bred of the degrading pride that comes with chosen ignorance, the pride of men ignorant because unable to be wise except through the wisdom of others” that Philip Hughes tells us lay behind them for centuries. It is our duty as Traditionalist Catholics to steel ourselves against the lies that are to come concerning the wonderful value of such hideous, willful principles that now have “had their fling” for five hundred years. It is our duty to hammer home the evil they have caused. Because that five hundred year ignorant, willful, individualist cancer has spread everywhere throughout the lymph of Christendom into every institution and everyone’s mindset, believing Catholics should spend the next two years helping those less aware among us to gird their loins. 2017---like 1517---is going to be a trial for all of us. And it is an awakening to this frightful nightmare that the 24th Annual Summer Symposium of the Roman Forum will seek to assure.
This year's lectures on "Half a Millennium of Total Depravity" will be going into a book to be published by Angelico Press. We very much intend it to serve as a means of fighting the campaign to glorify Luther which will indeed characterize 2017.

Michael Hoffman’s comment: In all of John Rao’s preceding remarks there is no allusion to the Lutheran civilization that produced J.S. Bach and Johann Andreas Eisenmenger (author of the magisterial Entdecktes Judenthum), to name but two of the West’s most outstanding men. Instead, there is a resort to the all too familiar canard, insinuated here, that Luther is synonymous with the coming of a supercharged avarice ("did not take long for a freedom from restraints upon the lawless, individual willfulness of Luther’s totally depraved mankind to be seen as the providential tool for molding unbridled human thoughts and actions into the building blocks of a new Age of Gold”). Such an accusation, to have utility, must ignore the "Age of Gold’s" two notorious agents, both contemporaries of Luther: the hideous Medici Pope Leo X who sanctioned not only the sale of indulgences, but Monte-bank usury which started the gradualist erosion of the Church’s immemorial dogma against profit on loans; and Johann Eck, Luther’s nemesis, who advocated a 5% rate of usury in his role as a theological prostitute for the fabulously wealthy Catholic banking house of Fugger. These facts are elucidated in this writer’s book, Usury in Christendom: The Mortal Sin that Was and Now is Not, which is studiously ignored by Catholics like Dr. Rao. Proceeding from Rao’s tack, the “traditional” Catholic assault on Luther will fail. There are ample grounds for criticizing and questioning Luther, but resorting to the old libel that his life’s work enhanced the "Age of Gold" is not one of them. Martin Luther is one of the most illustrious and principled opponents of profit on loans and the ruinous Money Power domination that compound interest would engender, of anyone in Renaissance Christendom. To suggest otherwise is rank ignorance and discredits whoever would preach these libels to anyone other than the members of their own anti-Lutheran choir.
